Dominican Week 2022 – AMCHAMDR
October 7, 2022
The American Chamber of Commerce of the Dominican Republic (AMCHAMDR) organized the 30th edition of the Dominican Week 2022 in the United States, with the continuing purpose of strengthening bilateral trade relations and ties with the Dominican diaspora in the United States.
Our firm was one of the sponsors of the Dominican Week 2022 that took place in the cities of Washington, D.C. and New York, between September 26-30, 2022. On behalf of the firm, our partner, Caroline Bonó, participated as part of the Dominican delegation in the different activities and bilateral meetings that took place during that week. The agenda of this 30th edition of the Dominican Week focused mainly on the positioning of the Dominican Republic as a platform for:
Tourism
Healthcare
Renewable Energies
Nearshoring/Regional Logistics Hub
Digital Transformation
During the first day of the Dominican Week 2022, the delegation participated in meetings with Georgetown University in which the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Dominican Republic, Roberto Álvarez, gave a keynote address on the recently formed Alliance for Development in Democracy (ADD), made up of the governments of Costa Rica, Panama, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic and the United States. Later, the delegation attended a special concert by the Dominican artist and composer Michel Camilo, an event that served as the stage to recognize the artist with a medal for his extensive career.
On the second day, the agenda took the delegation to meetings at the National Press Club and the offices of Squire Patton Boggs to discuss the midterm elections and the opportunities of the Dominican Republic as a nearshoring platform. Later, both the Embassy of the Dominican Republic in the United States and AMCHAMDR awarded recognition medals to outstanding Dominicans for their careers representing the Dominican diaspora.
During the third day, the delegation attended two discussion panels with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, to discuss economic prospects for Latin America and the Dominican Republic. Later, the delegation went to the offices of the polling firm Gallup to learn details about the World Happiness Report of that institution, an initiative that allows leaders and businessmen to be given a more complete vision of well-being in countries and communities around the world. At the end of the day, the delegation traveled to New York City for a conference with cybersecurity company AppGate, where they learned about the application of cybersecurity innovation in the federal government.
The fourth day, continuing with the agenda in New York, began with a meeting with representatives of the National Association of Hotels and Restaurants of the Dominican Republic (Asonahores), which described the tourist market of the Dominican Republic as a consolidated market for American tourists. The agenda continued that day at the New York City Bar Association with a talk on the impact of the new legislation implemented in the US and the potential effect on US investments in the Dominican Republic and the rest of Latin America. In that same venue they were received, as every year, by the organization Dominicans On Wall Street (DOWS), for a conference on the post-pandemic challenges and opportunities in both markets. The day concluded with a visit to Citi's cybersecurity center, where the delegation had the opportunity to witness operations, in real time, on the use of data analysis, cybersecurity, crisis management and intelligence analysis.
On the last day, the delegation was received by Major League Baseball (MLB) at its offices in New York for a tour of its headquarters. Later, the group traveled to the offices of the New York City Bar Association for an event with Arajet where they learned about the rebirth of Dominican aviation and how it has facilitated, and continues to facilitate, the connection with the Dominican diaspora in the United States. Dominican Week 2022 concluded with attendance to a baseball game between the New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles at Yankee Stadium.
